Mendel,
Chinese Three-toed Box Turtle: Mendel was given to the
ARLWC for education in September of 2002. She is used to make people
aware of the fact that domestic turtles can be purchased as pets,
so that wild turtles are not taken form the wild.
Pumpkin,
Wood Turtle: Pumpkin came to the ARLWC on May 10,
2002 after being hit by a car. Her bottom shell, the plastron, was
cracked in half. Although we were able to repair her cracked shell,
she cannot be released because she was a pet, evident by the hole
drilled into her shell. Turtles that are kept as pets can no longer
fend for themselves in the wild.
Facts on Wood Turtles: Wood Turtles can
live in the wild for 30-40 years. They roam around during the day
in search of fish, insects, berries, mushrooms, greens, and vegetables.
These turtles inhabit fields, woods, meadows, and farmlands. Wood
Turtles are Pennsylvania’s most terrestrial turtle, spending
the most time on land. However, they hibernate in water.
